aW.O.K.E. in Public Health Salons is a signature event of HEI that serves as a gathering of people who share similar interests in learning about and addressing the oppressive systems and policies that contribute to unequal health outcomes within BIPOC of the diaspora, the LGBTQIA+ population, and other marginalized populations.

aW.O.K.E. in Public Health Salons is inspired by the A’Lelia Walker (the only child of Madam C.J. Walker) who hosted salons during the Harlem Renaissance, which became known as the Dark Tower. The Dark Tower was a welcoming and open space for artists, musicians, writers, actors, newspaper publishers, and Civil Rights leaders who were a part of the Harlem Renaissance in A’Lelia walkers apartment home.

Similar to the Harlem Renaissance Dark Tower salons, a.W.O.K.E. in Public Health Salons serves as an welcoming and open space for public health enthusiasts, health activists, activists, and people who have passion for health equality to gather for a laid back, yet intellectually stimulating and engaging conversations on societal issues and systems that negatively impact the health and well-being of BIPOC, the LGBTQIA+ population, and other marginalized populations. a.W.O.K.E. in Public Health Salons are NOT webinar, journal clubs or lecture series. So be prepared to talk and interact with Salon attendees!
